Model United Nations

Model United nations was by far the most interesting CAS activity I had unertaken for the past 2 years. Although I had only slept 45 minutes for the past 36 hours (which is something i am quite proud of and shows my committment and persevereance), the outcome of the conference was nothing short of amazing.

With reference to my goals, I had achieved all of them and more.
1. I was able to learn about global issues as a whole, especially by visiting other committees. As the Chair of the 3rd Committee also known as SOCHA, I was well-versed in humanitarian issues and economic effects on a social basis. However, by visiting GA 1, GA 2, ECOSOC and the Security Council, I was able to learn more about the social issues at hand through different perspectives.
The Theme at hand was the Energy Crisis, so while i visisted the First Com, I learnt about the military issues (terrorism) through the development of nuclear power. Through the Second com, I learnt about the effects on the globe through the develeopment of an industry and in my com, we discussed the social issues of nuclear power.

2. I learnt more about each countries stance on global issues. By chairing a committee with around 150 delegates, I am bound to learn something about each country. While Israel completely prioratized social issues over its ecobnomic benefits the African countries supported it however encourages other countries to help them build the plants.

3. One of the most successful things goals I had achieved was the interaction with the delegates.
4. I was able to collaborate with my fellow chairs to make the committee more interesting. Furthermore, our committee was also able to win BEST COMMITTEE for the conference and also, I was voted best Chair due to my

Creativity - Singing

MUN Article

To publicize the Conference, I had to write an article that would be published in several newspapers.

My goals for MUN

The Colombo Model United Nations is just around the corner! And yes... this week has been hectic. Regardless that my Art Candidate Booklet is due on the same day, I have to mark even more FPS's, practice singing for the event (which i will write about at a latter stage) and lastly I have be perfect being a chair.

My goals for this Conference:

Learn more about global issues
Lean more about each countries stance on global issues
Be able to organize myself and interact with the delegates
Understand how the UN world as a body
World collaboratively with my fellow EXCO members
ENJOY MYSELF!

MUN Foreign policy Statement Marking

Yes... it has now come... the time for FOREIGN POLICY STATEMENTS! Well yes, for MUN the delegates are supposed to write a foreign policy statement that evaluates and accesses their countries stance on the topic at hand.

They are suppsoed to answer the following questions in this statement.

1. Does my country support this question
2. What has my country done to support or condemn this question
3. What does my country plan to do in the future to support or condemn this question.

Well, that is the delegates job. however, what the CHAIR of their committee, which is me, is supposed to do... is mark them and acess them, memorize them and understand them, so that when it come time for conference we know about every country and their stance about the topic. This shows that i am engaged with issues of global importance. Futhermore, I had to work collaboratively with my Vice President and Vice-Chair to complete all the marking. I have to persevere and commit to my role, and complete evertything before conference.

Personal Assistant for Hope for Kids

Last Saturday, i took part in the Charity chic Fashion Show to help Cancer patients in Sri Lanka. The motive for the Fashion show was to raise funds for the Childrens Ward of the Maharagama Cancer Hospital. Although I am not part of the Service, I took initiative and decided to help them in their cause. I wasn't a major contributer with the planning of the show, however, I helped a lot durign the show. I turned out for practices, took down notes of what the models, lights and music. Through this I showed perseverance and commitment in my activity. I was in charge of the fluency of the show: getting the models to go ton the runway, the timing in which they went out. I had to work collaboratively with others to ensure that the fashino show went right. Yes, as you can see in the photo, I have a huge head set!!! That was used to communicate with the sound, the lights and the organizers of the fashino show.

I had never really been a Personal Assistant before, and honestly I was lost! On the final day of the Fashino show, I must say I was quite frantic. Nevertheless, I was glad that I had undertaken new challenges and developed new skills, to help this service.

Gecko Inc.

Gecko Inc. is a new CAS program at OSC had started this year, which focuses on athletic enrichment in our community. The students of this service and our athletic coordinator, Mr. Shipley, planned and initiated it from scratch. The other CAS member and I planned and initiated activities and collaborated with others to make this Service a success. Last year, I had developed my skills of working together as a team to pull everything together and make each session a success. As a CAS leader I have developed my leadership skills as I have been required to be in charge making sure everything is working right as well as to have control. It shows my perseverance and commitment in this activity.
The Service aspect of this is that, Colombo does not have many athletic facilities and many schools do not have sufficient amount of athletic gear or supplies fortheir students. We realized that athletes who are motivated to practice their sport find themselves lost, not knowing where to go. Initially the idea of the service was to provide facilities for the community to come to our school and play their sport, gradually our group realized that the some school children required more than a place to play their sport, but do not have basic athletic gear like a basketball balls or cricket gloves. Therefore, the aim of the Gecko Inc. is to further improve and enrich the athletic community of our own school as well as others in Colombo. The students of Overseas School of Colombo meet every Saturday to organize a basketball event at our own facility, which is catered to anyone and everyone who is interested in playing sport; furthermore, all profits from the entrance fee, selling of refreshments and donations will be channeled into facilitating less fortunate schools that do not have sufficient athletic supplies. I will continue this Service as I understand the ethical implications and affect it has on my community as well as enjoying participating in the sport i love.
